Everland and the ER
Today was a day that I've been waiting for for about 2 years! We finally were going to Everland with ICS and our baby! Everland is a huge theme park here in Korea. It's actually quite close to where we live but the public transportation to get there is a nightmare. We went a few years ago over Chusok Holiday with some friends, but that was way back when we didn't have a baby. I've been dreaming of the day we could go again with him but we didn't want to go too early and not be able to enjoy very much. This was perfect timing since Isaac is now walking, enjoying freedom and new experiences, and ICS was going on their annual trip so we got to tag along and avoid the public transportation!
The morning of the trip, Isaac had had a rough night of sleep and I heavily debated not going. But we decided to go ahead with plan A. We enjoyed the park zoo and noticed that Isaac was a little less enthusiastic than normal. He wasn't even hungry. So we just had a calm morning together and didn't do any rides. After lunch, Jason went to ride the T-Express and I went to the cozy nursing station.
Much to my horror, Isaac kept in tradition with his "ruin mommy's clothes because I'm at an ICS function" motto. (If you don't know what I'm referring to, Iz has always had a special knack for pooping, peeing, and vomiting on me at ICS events!) It was a crazy hour alone in soiled clothes, the Korean in charge of the room didn't speak any English and didn't know how to help me...so that was great. Luckily Isaac had a change of clothes, but I didn't. However, Jason did let me buy a new shirt!
After the incident there, isaac slept for a good amount of time. We tried looking for at least one ride for him and found Dumbo's flying elephant. He really loved it and it was the least jerky of all the baby rides so we went on it a few times. Then he toddled around the park for a little bit before we got on the bus to go home.
Our day didn't end there though...
As we were going home, we noticed that Isaac's cough was getting worse and he was just so tired and sleepy. He couldn't sleep well even on the bus because of the cough and he was having trouble breathing. We went to the doctor as soon as we got home, who then advised us to go to the ER. Those are words a mother never wants to hear!
Luckily, we do have an International Hospital close by. It's brand new but we had heard stellar recommendations through friends. We hopped on the road there and prayed hard for Isaac to be okay. The pediatrician was gone and it was Friday night. We only had 2 ER nurses and a doctor to help us but we were the only ones there. They gave Iz a steroid shot and wanted to start an IV. This is the part that breaks my heart.
The IV was horrible. The nurses clearly had very little experience (or patience) with children this young. They didn't understand why he was crying...
They wanted the IV in his elbow or his wrist---both places that bend, but he wasn't allowed to bend his arm once it was in. They tried both arms and legs again and again. If you have been around Isaac you probably know he's one REALLY strong kid! And if he doesn't like something, he is not shy to let you know. The howling cries were breaking my heart. The nurses tried so hard to keep him from moving but couldn't succeed. Finally they left the IV in his wrist and put a splint on it to "keep it from bending" which didn't work. They really did a poor job and I think they knew it but didn't want to start over.
A few hours later, after walking around holding him and shushing to sleep, the IV bag was still completely full. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the confused expressions and hurried checks meant that they did in fact do it wrong and we had just wasted our time here. They let us go home since his fever had gone down but.....
This was a horrible night for me!
We finally went back home, Isaac breathing much better and drinking a lot of water and milk. Our amazing friends cooked us a few meals and brought them over in the middle of the night! I hadn't even thought about eating since lunch so this was a welcomed warm meal and comfort!
The next day, Isaac slept a lot but then he was back to his normal self, even sucking down his yummy meds.

Jason, nobody is happy about you forcing us to ride the chair lift except you.... |
